“Jobless And Hopeless!”

Unemployment Crisis Threatens Ghana’s Future

Ghana is sitting on a ticking time bomb as rising unemployment—especially among the youth—threatens national stability and economic progress.
Across the country, thousands of graduates roam the streets in search of non-existent jobs, while many skilled workers are forced into menial or informal employment.
A frustrated university graduate in Accra told the Catholic Standard:
“We were told education is the key. But the door is locked.”
The situation is worsened by a mismatch between education and industry needs, limited industrial growth, and a sluggish private sector.
Ironically, even sectors like healthcare are losing trained professionals to migration, while many remain unemployed locally due to poor conditions.
Experts warn that prolonged unemployment fuels:
Crime and social unrest
Mental health challenges
Loss of national productivity
An economist recently noted:
“Idle youth are not just an economic issue—they are a security risk.”
Without urgent intervention, Ghana risks losing an entire generation of productive citizens.
