MAHAMA SNUB SPARKS CHURCH UNITY

THE Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has thrown its full support behind President John Dramani Mahama following the controversial withdrawal of an honorary doctorate by a US university—an action that has instead galvanised unprecedented unity among Ghana’s Christian community.
The decision, taken by Lincoln University just hours before the President’s scheduled visit on Thursday, March 26, reportedly stemmed from objections to his stance on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.
Rather than isolate the President, the move has triggered strong backing from major churches. In a statement signed by Most Rev. Matthew K. Gyamfi, the Bishops expressed solidarity with President Mahama, while raising concerns over the manner of the university’s decision, urging fairness, transparency and respect for national dignity.
They also praised the Assemblies of God Church for its swift and firm response, particularly commending its General Secretary, Rev. Ernest Birikorang, for what they described as “moral clarity and pastoral leadership”.
The Assemblies of God had earlier framed the development in biblical terms, citing Acts 5:41, suggesting the President’s rejection was, in fact, a badge of honour for standing by his convictions.
The Bishops further used the moment to reaffirm Ghana’s cultural and moral values, insisting they are not subject to external pressure. They urged Parliament to expedite action on the Family Values Bill and assured the President of prayers for wisdom and courage.
They also highlighted President Mahama’s leadership on the global reparations agenda at the United Nations, describing it as a demonstration of Ghana’s moral voice on the world stage.
Church leaders across denominations are now calling for national unity, intensified prayer, and steadfast commitment to faith and values.
