A Shepherd Worth Celebrating

Archbishop Palmer-Buckle Marks Triple Milestone in Cape Coast

The Catholic Church in Ghana will on Sunday, January 11, joyfully celebrate a rare and remarkable triple anniversary of one of its most distinguished sons, Most Rev. Charles Gabriel Palmer-Buckle, Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast and former Editor of The Catholic Standard.
At a solemn Eucharistic celebration at the historic St. Francis de Sales Cathedral, Cape Coast, the Archbishop will give thanks to God for 75 years of life, 49 years of priestly service, and 33 years of episcopal ministry.
Born on June 15, 1950, in Axim, Archbishop Palmer-Buckle was ordained a priest on December 12, 1976, in Accra, and later consecrated a bishop on January 6, 1993, in Rome. Over the decades, he has distinguished himself as a pastor, teacher, bridge-builder and fearless voice for justice, peace and national cohesion.
Beyond the sanctuary, Archbishop Palmer-Buckle is widely respected for his intellectual depth, calm moral authority and unwavering commitment to dialogue in both Church and national life. His contributions to Catholic journalism — including his stewardship as Editor of the Catholic Standard — helped shape the paper into a thoughtful and principled voice on faith and public affairs.
Clergy, religious, traditional leaders, public officials and lay faithful from across the country are expected to converge on Cape Coast for the thanksgiving Mass, scheduled for 9:00 am.
The celebration offers the faithful an opportunity not only to honour a life of service, but also to reflect on the enduring value of servant leadership rooted in humility, prayer and courage.
A detailed report on the anniversary celebrations will be published in the Sunday, January 18 edition of The Catholic Standard.
