Mahama Reaffirms Ghana’s Stand on LGBTQ Issues

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated that Ghana’s cultural, moral, and religious values will continue to guide national decisions regarding LGBTQ matters, assuring the public that no external pressure will compel the country to abandon its deeply held beliefs.

Speaking at a meeting with religious leaders in Accra, the President noted that while Ghana upholds the dignity and rights of all citizens, the nation remains committed to protecting the family system as traditionally understood.

He stressed that debates on LGBTQ issues must be approached with respect, sobriety, and fidelity to Ghana’s constitutional framework. “We will continue to safeguard human dignity,” he said, “but we will not undermine the foundations of our society.”

President Mahama further called for calm and national unity as Parliament continues deliberations on proposed legal and policy adjustments. He encouraged faith-based organisations, especially the Christian community, to continue offering moral guidance while supporting peaceful national discourse.

The President’s message comes at a time of renewed public debate on LGBTQ issues, following reports of intensified advocacy by some international partners. Religious groups, including the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, have welcomed the President’s reaffirmation of Ghana’s long-held stance.
