The Knighthood of St. Gregory the Great has been conferred on two individuals from the Accra and the Tamale Archdioceses.
At the Nunciature in Accra, the former Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, Henryk Mieczysław Jagodziński, conferred the Award on Mr. Augustine Fleming Dodd for his many years of technical services to the Nunciature.
The Nuncio commended Sir Dodd for the immense services that he has been rendering to the National Catholic Secretariat, the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar and the Apostolic Nunciature.
The other, a former Supreme Knight of the Knights of Marshall, Sir Knight Charles L. L. Cobb, was knighted by the Archbishop of Tamale Most Rev. Philip Naameh for his meritorious services to Mother Church in the Tamale Ecclesiastical Province (TEP).
His investiture took place at the Our Lady of Annunciation Cathedral in Tamale with many Priests including the Vicar General of Tamale Archdiocese Very Rev. Fr. Hilary Pogbeyir, consecrated men and women, members of the Forum of Papal Knights and Dames-Ghana, the family of Sir Cobb and Marshallans among other groups, in attendance.
The National Chairman of the National Catholic Laity Council, Sir Prof. Elias N. K. Sowley, assisted the Archbishop to decorate Sir Cobb with his Papal medal. The Archbishop advised the new Papal Knight to continue with his selflessness and dedication in serving humanity and Mother Church.
Sir Cobb having joined the Knights of Marshall on 6th June 1996, rose through the ranks to become the Grand Knight of Council 65, Techiman, in 2002, and later the Regional Grand Knight of the erstwhile Brong Ahafo Region in 2010. He continued up the ladder to the Supreme Council where he served as the Supreme Membership Coordinator until he was elected as the Deputy Supreme Knight in 2017. In September 2019, he assumed office as the Chief Executive Officer when he was installed as the 33rd Supreme Knight.
The Order of St. Gregory was established on 1st September 1831 by Pope Gregory XVI and Catholics and certain notable non-Catholics are eligible to receive this award in recognition of their personal services to the Holy See and to the Catholic Church, through their unusual labours, their support of the Holy See, and the examples they set in their communities and their countries.
