Gov’t will not condone wrong doing – Prez Akufo-Addo
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has cautioned that his government would not protect anyone who flouts the laws of the nation irrespective of their political, ethnic or religious affiliation.
He made this statement when he paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as part of his three-day visit to the Ashanti Region last week-end to thank the people for the massive show of confidence reposed in him and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2016 General Elections.
The President said he was committed to ensuring that the rule of law worked without fear or favour and charged the security agencies to deal with anyone who engages in acts that undermine law and order in the country.
He stressed: “it will not be under my watch that people will take the law into their own hands, neither will it be under my watch that the laws of our land will not be enforced. That will never happen; the law will work without fear or favour”
President Akufo-Addo’s caution followed the attack by members of the Delta Force, a vigilante group within the NPP on Mr. George Adjei, the Ashanti Regional Security Co-ordinator, whose appointment generated violent reactions from some members of the party in the Region.
The President assured the Asantehene and the people of the Ashanti Region that measures had been put in place to forestall such future occurrences.
In another development, the President responding to a question during a media interaction, hinted of plans by his government to deal with the menace of illegal mining, popularly known as ‘galamsey’ in the country.
He noted that illegal mining was a complex phenomenon with widespread interests and forces which required a comprehensive policy and legislation to deal with.
President Akufo-Addo said the widespread nature of galamsey as well as “forces and interests” involved, required a holistic approach to the phenomenon, stating that government was working on a document to tackle the issue.
Meanwhile, the Graphic Communications Group Limited and other media partners have launched a media campaign against illegal mining to mobilise at least one million signatures to urge the government to act on the menace.
