Bishop Agyenta decries materialism
From Francis E. Monnie
Most Rev. Alfred Agyenta, Bishop of Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese, has decried the craze for materialism among Ghanaians which had led to moral decadence and increased crime wave in the society.
He stressed that “many people have become confused in the choice of their moral conduct, thus creating fertile grounds for individualism which gives no room for family and societal cohesion”.
Bishop Agyenta stated this in a message read on his behalf by Very Rev. Fr. Paul Kapochina, Rector of the Our Lady of Seven Sorrows Minor Basilica, Navrongo at the Fourth North-East Regional Conference of the Knights and Ladies of Marshall at the University for Development Studies, Navrongo Campus.
The two-day Conference on the theme: A Call to Unity, Charity, Fraternity and Service: The Role of the Marshallan, was attended by about 250 Marshallans from seven component Councils and Courts of the Order.
Bishop Agyenta lamented that modernisation was driving man away from God and leading to selfishness, division and lack of charity, adding that people had placed God second to material possessions.
He urged Marshallans to be committed to the virtues of Unity, Charity, Fraternity, Service, be agents of change and rediscover the vision of their Founding Fathers whose aim was to create an enabling environment where Catholics would feel free and stand united in fighting the evils of society.
The Bishop lauded members of the Order for complementing the evangelization efforts of the Church through services rendered towards the material growth of the Church.
The Supreme Knight of the Knights of Marshall, Sir Kt. Bro. Ernest Amoako-Arhen, urged Marshallans to speak out on national issues. He briefed members on the Marshallan Security and Investment Fund (MaSIF).
The Grand Lady, MRL Sis. Alice Stella Ayebi, in an address urged the Marshallans to live by the tenets of the Order.
The out-going Regional Grand Knight, Worthy Bro. Joseph Aram, thanked members of component Councils and Courts for their support and co-operation and entreated them to extend same to his successor.
He stated that during his tenure, three Councils at Bongo, Garu and Zebilla and two Courts at Walewale and Zebilla were consecrated.
New Regional Executives were elected and installed during the Conference with Worthy Bro. Victor Abagrey as the Regional Grand Knight of the North-East Regional Council and Respected Lady Sis. Agnes Zizinga, Noble Lady.
Five Brothers were elevated from the rank of Past Grand Knights to Past Regional Grand Knights while five Sisters were also elevated from the rank of Past Noble Ladies to Past Regional Noble Ladies.
At a climax Mass at the St. Joseph Church, Navrongo, the Marshallans donated 30 plastic chairs to the Church.
