Silence The guns, Pope Leo XIV pleads
Holy Father calls for dialogue as violence grips Iran and the wider Middle East
Pope Leo XIV has urged the world to pray for an end to the violence devastating Iran and the broader Middle East, warning of a spreading climate of hatred and fear that risks drawing neighbouring countries into deeper instability.
Speaking to some fifteen thousand pilgrims gathered in St Peter’s Square in Rome after the Sunday Angelus, the Holy Father said that news from the region continued to arrive that caused him deep dismay; He made particular mention of the violence and devastation being visited upon Iran and described the region as gripped by a widespread climate of hatred and fear.
The Pope also expressed concern that the conflict could spill over into neighbouring countries, warning that beloved Lebanon risked sinking once again into instability.
In a heartfelt appeal, Pope Leo called on all present to pray that the roar of bombs might cease, that weapons might fall silent, and that a space for dialogue might open, in which the voice of the people may be heard.
Entrusting his prayer to Mary, Queen of Peace, he asked her to intercede for those who suffer because of war and to guide hearts along paths of reconciliation and hope.
