Peace Pact On The Horizon as NPP Heats Up
Unity Meeting Set Ahead of Jan 31 Presidential Primary
— Ghana Watches with Hopes for Decency
With just days to go before the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary on Saturday, January 31, 2026, key presidential aspirants and party stakeholders are set to come together in a high-level peace pact meeting on Thursday, January 22, in a move aimed at strengthening party unity and promoting a peaceful internal election process.
The joint stakeholders meeting — scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at the Asante Hall of the Alisa Hotel in Accra — is being organised by the party’s Presidential Elections Committee (PEC). All five presidential candidates are expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) committing themselves to conduct their campaigns and the primary process in a spirit of patriotism, loyalty and unity, and to support the eventual winner of the contest.
The aspirants expected to sign the peace pact include Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ken Ohene Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong – a diverse field vying to steer the NPP into the 2028 general elections.
The move comes amid heightened interest in the primary, which will be conducted across 277 voting centres nationwide with over 214,000 delegates expected to cast their ballots.
The signing of the pact is intended to forestall divisions that could emerge during and after the vote, and to demonstrate a united front ahead of the arduous road to the next national elections. Representatives of the National Peace Council have also been invited to lend their support to the meeting, which reflects broad efforts within the party to prioritise peace and democratic discipline.
Recently the NPP’s Presidential Elections Committee reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent, peaceful and credible internal primary, reiterating the importance of fairness and openness in the process.
As Ghana’s political landscape grows increasingly animated with contests and endorsements, the planned unity pact meeting represents a critical moment for one of the nation’s major political parties. Observers and civic advocates have underscored the need for the contest to proceed with respect, dignity and development-oriented discourse.
In the coming week, all eyes will remain on the NPP’s internal election, with many Ghanaians hoping the process will exemplify the best of democratic practice — and that the commitment to peace signed on paper will be honoured in the hearts and actions of all involved.
