Supreme Court Halts Kpandai Election Rerun

The Supreme Court of Ghana has ordered a suspension of all preparations for the Kpandai parliamentary election rerun, originally scheduled for December 30, 2025, following a legal challenge over the annulment of the 2024 election.

A five‑member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Gabriel Pwamang, directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to halt all activities connected with the rerun until the court determines the judicial review filed by Matthew Nyindam, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate.

Mr. Nyindam contends that the Tamale High Court lacked jurisdiction to nullify the earlier election, claiming the petition was filed outside the constitutional timeframe. The Supreme Court, noting a prima facie case, has scheduled a substantive hearing for 13 January 2026.

The suspension leaves the Kpandai seat vacant, pending resolution. The NPP welcomed the decision, describing it as a reinforcement of the rule of law. The Supreme Court also expressed concern over the absence of EC leadership at Tuesday’s proceedings, emphasising the importance of institutional accountability in democratic processes.

The Catholic Standard calls on all political actors and citizens to exercise restraint, respect the legal process, and give peace a chance, trusting that justice will ultimately guide the outcome.
