CRS Students of Donkorkrom SHS Receive Textbooks

Over a hundred Form 2 and 3 students of the Donkorkrom Agricultural Senior High School (DASHS), in the Kwahu Afram Plains North District of the Eastern Region, have benefitted from a donation of Christian Religious Studies (CRS) textbooks and Bibles, courtesy of the Holy Rosary Sisters.

The initiative was spearheaded by Sr. Joy Abuh, of the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary (MSHR), who also serves as a CRS teacher and School Chaplain at DASHS. Addressing her students and fellow staff members during the handing-over ceremony recently, Sr. Abuh revealed that for over a decade, many students had struggled to afford textbooks due to poverty, with some showing little interest in acquiring them.

Motivated by the desire to see her students – especially those in their final year – succeed, she appealed to the MSHR Development Office in the United States for financial support. With assistance from Srs. Ellen Anderson and Ifeoma Onwudinjo, she was able to purchase 200 CRS textbooks and 100 Bibles for the students.

Sr. Abuh urged the students to make effective use of the books, assuring them that diligent reading would greatly improve their examination performance. “There’s no student who takes time to read this book thoroughly who will not score an ‘A’ in CRS,” she assured. She also stressed the importance of reading the Bible critically, as many examination questions are drawn directly from Scripture.

She encouraged the students to study hard, expressing her heartfelt wish: “It is my desire that you pass your exams with flying colours.”

Mr. Awuni Baba, Headmaster of DASHS, expressed profound gratitude to the Congregation on behalf of the school. Describing the gesture as a “yeoman’s job,” he acknowledged the financial challenges faced by students in acquiring textbooks and described the donation as a “divine intervention.”

Citing poor performance in Literature during the 2024 WASSCE, largely due to students not owning the required books, he encouraged the students to honour the donors by using the materials wisely. “If you know you’re going to dump the books, leave them with us,” he warned, noting the school now expected no less than a ‘B’ grade from beneficiaries.

Senior Prefect and final-year student, Dodza Yayera, speaking on behalf of the students, thanked Sr. Abuh, adding, “We will not disappoint you. The gesture has created a lasting bond, and these books will help us make history for our school.”

Staff members present included Mr. Emmanuel Adablah (Assistant Head – Administration), Mr. Cletus Kwotuah (PLC Coordinator), Mr. Daniel Larbi (HOD, General Arts), Mr. Kessie Amankwah Kenneth (CRS Teacher), and Mr. Asante Kwabena Daniel (Maths Teacher and Assistant Chaplain).

As Chaplain, Sr. Abuh continues to support the students spiritually and organises talks by resource persons from various backgrounds to enrich their academic and moral development.
