A New Era For The Catholic Standard: Agbeko Takes The Helm

The Catholic Standard, Ghana’s foremost faith-based newspaper, begins a new chapter with the appointment of Mr. Peter Martey Agbeko as Managing Editor of Standard Newspapers and Magazines Ltd. (SNAM), effective July 2, 2025. Mr. Agbeko succeeds the venerable Mr. Benedict Batabe Assorow, fondly known as Sir Ben, whose exceptional stewardship from 2016 to 2025 revitalised the publication and secured its place as a credible and principled voice in national discourse.

The official handing-over ceremony took place during the 18th Annual General Meeting of SNAM Ltd., where Mr. Agbeko was formally introduced to shareholders, board members, and staff. In a powerful address, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, Bishop of Sunyani and President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC), paid glowing tribute to Sir Ben for his devotion and resilience. “You kept the Company going in challenging and difficult times. You are the reason the Company is still in business,” he affirmed.

During his nine-year tenure, Sir Ben championed bold cost-saving reforms, oversaw a remarkable 77% increase in revenue, and steadfastly anchored the newspaper in the Church’s evangelising mission. Under his leadership, The Catholic Standard evolved into a mission-driven institution and a moral compass for public engagement.

Speaking at the ceremony, Bishop Gyamfi commended Mr. Agbeko for accepting the call to serve the Church in this significant role. “We thank you for stepping up. Own the business. Work with passion and commitment, as you would for your personal enterprise. We pray you move this Company to a higher pedestal,” he encouraged, assuring him of the Church’s full support.

Mr. Agbeko, a seasoned journalist, public relations specialist, and practising Catholic, brings to the role a wealth of experience spanning decades. In his acceptance remarks, he said: “I am truly honoured and humbled to accept the position of Managing Editor. I extend my sincere gratitude to the Board, my colleagues, and all stakeholders for entrusting me with this responsibility. I pledge to uphold the values of faith, integrity, and excellence that define this noble institution. Together, we will deliver inspiring, truthful, and impactful content that embodies our Catholic values and serves the good of Ghana.”

He also paid tribute to his predecessor, stating: “Sir Ben is a man who turned challenges into opportunities and led with a missionary spirit. His legacy is one of quiet strength, visionary leadership, and deep faith.”

Sir Ben, in his heartfelt farewell, expressed gratitude to the GCBC, the Board, and all who supported him throughout his tenure. He made special mention of Dr. Anthony Bonnah-Koomson for his invaluable counsel in the preparation of the newspaper’s editorials. “I leave with a heart full of appreciation. May God bless the work of SNAM, its Board, management, and staff,” he concluded.

The Board Chair, Sir Dela Selormey, also commended Sir Ben’s leadership: “Though you retire, your influence remains indelible. Your steady hand and quiet mentorship shaped not only this institution but all who worked with you.”

As Mr. Agbeko assumes leadership, The Catholic Standard community — from the bishops to the staff and readers — look forward to a new era of purpose-driven journalism. With prayers for wisdom, courage, and grace, all eyes are on him as he charts a bold and faithful course forward.
